Biography
Michael is a Senior Principal Research Engineer and UI Designer at Autodesk Research in Toronto, Canada. He is interested in applying his user interface design, rapid-prototyping, and programming skills in developing innovative and easy-to-use products in a multi-disciplinary environment.
Michael has over 30 years of user interface experience in various companies. He has designed and shipped Digital Video Recorders for TiVo and TGC, digital SLR camera UI and firmware for Foveon & Sigma, websites for Levis and Timberland, and QuickTime Virtual Reality (QTVR) software for Apple Computer. Michael also has done user interface research and prototypes in the areas of 3D, multi-modal input, pen input, language localization, and information management. At Autodesk, his teams have transferred research projects to products such as Autodesk Screencast and Sketchbook Motion (best iPad app 2016).
Michael received a B.A.Sc in Engineering Science in 1985 and a M.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering/Human-Computer Interaction in 1988, both from University of Toronto. His Master dissertation on a two-dimensional emulation of a three-dimensional trackball is a notable 3D interaction technique that is referenced in computer graphics textbooks and incorporated in various products.
Michael is the holder of eight user interface patents and has published his work in journals such as the ACM SIGCHI, UIST & SIGGRAPH.
